Concrete Roads vs. Asphalt Roads: Which is Better? Selecting the right material for road construction is a critical decision that influences performance, longevity, and overall cost. Concrete and asphalt are the two primary options, each with distinct advantages and limitations. The key is to choose the material that best aligns with the intended application and environmental conditions. Asphalt Roads Asphalt roads are known for their flexibility and smooth surface, offering a more comfortable driving experience. However, they are vulnerable to weather conditions, such as extreme heat or heavy rain, which accelerates deterioration. Typically, asphalt roads have an average lifespan of 10–15 years, making them suitable for general use and smaller projects. Advantages • Lower initial construction costs. • Quick construction time; roads can be used immediately after the asphalt is laid. • Simple and fast maintenance using resurfacing techniques (re-paving the road surface). Disadvantages • Faster degradation compared to concrete, particularly in areas with high temperatures or frequent flooding. • High maintenance costs due to the need for frequent repairs. Concrete Roads Concrete roads consist of a mixture of cement, stone, sand, and reinforcement materials such as wire mesh, which enhance strength and durability. With an average lifespan of 20–40 years, concrete roads are ideal for large-scale projects and infrastructure that must withstand heavy loads, such as highways, bridges, and industrial zones. Advantages • Superior strength and durability, capable of handling heavy loads effectively. • Stable and smooth surface, with reduced risk of subsidence over time. • Long-term cost-efficiency due to lower maintenance requirements. Disadvantages • Higher initial construction costs. • Longer construction times, as the concrete must cure and gain strength before use. • Complex and costly maintenance processes for repairs. Deciding between concrete and asphalt roads requires careful consideration of factors such as usage, budget, and environmental conditions. By aligning these factors with the project’s objectives, you can ensure the road meets its intended purpose effectively. Siam Industrial Wire offers premium-quality wire mesh steel grids tailored for concrete road and flooring applications. These products are manufactured in compliance with Thai Industrial Standards (TIS) and certified by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI). The offerings include TIS 737 for standard applications and TIS 926 for cane and rubber-specific uses, ensuring superior quality and performance. What is "Fatigue"?Why Must Strong Structures Pass This Test?In engineering, a material being strong doesn’t always mean it’s durable. What’s more challenging than tensile strength is repeated loading, also known as Fatigue. What is Fatigue?Fatigue is the weakening of a material caused by repeated loading and unloading. For example, steel wires used in prestressed concrete, piles, or bridges may not break from a single force. But after tens or hundreds of thousands of repeated stresses, the material becomes "fatigued" — and can fail without warning.Examples of Fatigue-Related Failures:Bridge cables snapping after just a few years of useStructural collapse due to continuous vibrationsDamage invisible to the naked eyeWhy Perform Fatigue Testing at SIW-Testing Service Center?1. Internationally Certified StandardsSIW operates the only wire testing lab in Thailand certified for Fatigue Testing by NATA (Australia’s national lab accreditation body). This guarantees that all equipment and processes meet strict international standards.2. Real Testing — Beyond TheoryWe simulate repeated stress cycles to determine how many times your wire can withstand force before failure. You’ll receive detailed reports with clear graphs, backed by advanced tools and expert analysis.3. Supporting Nation-Level ConstructionSIW supports major infrastructure projects—expressways, bridges, rail systems—where high-performance wire is critical.Fatigue testing is a key step before the wire is ever used in the field.

Gen Y leadership shaping the future of organizations Naphitset Chainapong, Head of Section-Demand and Market Planning, who plays a key role in driving organizational success. “Growing up in the middle of Gen Y, I’ve witnessed the rapid evolution of technology, transitioning from the analog era to the fully digital age we live in today. This experience has shaped my mindset and serves as a fundamental basis for how I approach my work to this day. In my perspective, the transition to digital is no longer an option but a necessity. I clearly remember when I started working at SIW, we relied heavily on paper documents, and at times, the piles of paperwork were almost impossible to manage. But today, we’ve seen a significant difference. Many documents no longer need to be printed, and they have been fully integrated into a digital system. Additionally, we now use various software tools to analyze statistical data, helping us identify market demands and study consumer behavior quickly and more accurately. The result is more precise decision-making, allowing us to better meet our customers’ needs. Another equally important and trending topic is sustainability. In my perspective, it’s not just a fancy phrase but a global responsibility that every organization should prioritize. SIW has continuously developed sustainability strategies, such as controlling carbon emissions, initiating the "1 Rai Farm" project, and organizing CSR activities that foster collaboration with local communities. We’ve always believed that growth must come with a sense of responsibility toward both our communities and the world. As a Gen Y, I believe SIW benefits from the generation gap, gaining fresh ideas from younger team members and valuable experience from senior colleagues. An organization’s success doesn’t depend on one individual but comes from the synergy of all generations working together to innovate while preserving the past and continuing to develop sustainably. And finally, I believe that working in this rapidly changing era requires flexibility, open-mindedness, and collaboration from everyone. With our collective dedication, I am confident that SIW will overcome every challenge and continue to grow steadily in an ever-changing world.”

Special Grade Earthquake-Resistant PC Strand - "A Safety Standard for Life Beyond Strength"In an earthquake situation, the very seconds when a structure begins to fail can determine life or death. Therefore, designing structures to delay "Collapse" becomes a critical factor in ensuring enough time for safe evacuation. At Siam Industrial Wire (SIW), we place great emphasis on every mechanical property of PC Strand, recognizing its importance as a key component in civil engineering design. Our special earthquake-resistant PC Strand is developed with a higher "Force Ratio" than standard products.• Force Ratio (the ratio between Breaking Load and Yield Load) in SIW’s PC Strand is higher than standard grades, meaning the steel does not fail immediately after reaching its yield point.• This allows the structure to withstand seismic forces longer, effectively "delaying" Collapse and giving occupants valuable time to evacuate safely.• Additionally, the increased "Plastic Deformation" of steel enabled by the high Force Ratio makes the product suitable for plasticity-based structural design, which emphasizes "Ductile Behavior".• And when exposed to seismic forces, this ductility causes serious and visible "Cracking" before total collapse occurs, serving as a warning sign that allows for timely intervention or evacuation.• It also helps reduce the risk of Nature Abrupt or sudden Collapse as plasticity-based design lowers the chance of instant concrete brittle failure — which in turn increases the likelihood of survival and reduces potential loss.SIW manufactures and exports special-grade PC Strand with a higher Force Ratio than standard requirements to Denmark, conforming to FprEN 10138-1&-3:2009 standards. These products are certified with the FI Marking of Denmark. At SIW, we are deeply aware of the impacts of natural disasters and the value of every life.

How deep should the pile be drilled to ensure safety?Piles are an essential component used to support and transfer the weight and load of a building to the ground. The load transfer of a pile occurs through the frictional resistance between the pile surface and the surrounding soil or through direct load transfer to the underlying soil or bedrock. The main purpose of using piles is to prevent the building or structure from settling or sinking into the ground. For small-scale buildings, the piles used are generally shorter in length and fewer in number. However, larger buildings may require a greater number of piles or longer piles to transfer the load to deeper layers of soil and bear a higher load capacity. If the pile extends to the level of hard soil, it can directly transfer the load from the building to the hard soil layer. How do piles bear the load?Piles bear the load through two main types of forces: "skin friction" and "end bearing." 1. Skin Friction: This force is generated by the frictional resistance between the pile surface and the surrounding soil. The magnitude of this force depends on the type of soil (each soil type has different skin friction properties) and the characteristics of the pile surface. 2. End Bearing: This force occurs at the pile tip, where the pile rests on a firm soil layer. The magnitude of this force depends on the type of soil, such as the presence of voids between soil particles. Soils with more voids have a lower load-bearing capacity, while compacted sands have a higher load-bearing capacity. In general pile design, for skin friction piles, the focus is on the size and length of the pile to generate sufficient lateral friction to support the applied load. For end bearing piles, the design aims to have the pile sit on a compacted sand layer. Types of piles used in construction can be broadly categorized into three main types based on their manufacturing and usage characteristics: 1. Spun Piles: These piles are produced by spinning concrete in a mold at high speed. This process results in a dense and strong concrete core with embedded steel reinforcement. Spun piles can be driven or drilled and are suitable for high-rise buildings that require strength to withstand wind loads and earthquakes. 2. Bored Piles: Bored piles are constructed by drilling a hole and then placing steel reinforcement and concrete into the drilled hole. They come in various lengths and sizes as specified. Bored piles are suitable for projects that require high strength and load capacity. 3. Prestressed Concrete (PC) Piles: PC piles are manufactured by placing concrete into a mold that contains prestressed steel wires or strands. The concrete is then compressed to enhance its strength. PC piles are used in construction projects that require high strength and durability in various environmental conditions. Siam Wire Industries (SIW) offers PC Wire and PC Strand, which are the primary components used in the production of prestressed concrete piles. SIW has gained recognition in over 50 countries worldwide and provides post-sales services, including on-site wire pulling tests for customers. These services ensure customer confidence in using SIW's prestressed wire products.
